Classic Stirred Cocktails

These cocktails are prepared with the "Stir and strain" technique. Stirring dilutes a cocktail less than shaking and does not alter its' appearance or texture. Almost any recipe that is served "On the rocks", may also be served is this manner. Here are the classics:
The Manhattan

In a mixing glass 1/2 full of ice add:
    3/4 oz. (21 ml.) red Vermouth
    1 3/4 oz. (49 ml.) Canadian Whisky
    1 drop Angostura bitters
Stir and strain into a cocktail glass, and decorate with a lemon zest and a cherry skewered with a pick.

The Martini

In a mixing glass 1/2 full of ice add:
    3/4 oz. (21 ml.) white Vermouth
    1 3/4 oz. (49 ml.) Dry Gin
Stir and strain into a cocktail glass, and decorate with:
    Martini - an olive skewered with a pick.
    Dry Martini - an olive skewered with a pick.
    Perfect and Sweet Martini - cherry skewered with a pick.
    Extra Dry Martini - a lemon zest with a pick.

The Rob Roy

In a mixing glass 1/2 full of ice add:
    3/4 oz. (21 ml.) red Vermouth
    1 3/4 oz. (49 ml.) Scotch Whisky
Stir and strain into a cocktail glass, and decorate with:
    Dry and Perfect Rob Roy - a lemon zest and a pick.
    Sweet Rob Roy - cherry skewered with a pick.

The trick to memorizing these recipes is in the name! Just remember:

Martini = Dry Gin
Manhattan = Canadian Whisky
Rob Roy = Scotch Whisky

The terms "Extra Dry", "Dry", "Perfect" or "Sweet" refer to the quantity and type of Vermouth used in the recipes.

Extra Dry - 1 drop white Vermouth
Dry - 1/4 oz. (7 ml.) white Vermouth
Perfect - 1/4 oz. (7 ml.) white Vermouth & 1/4 oz. (7 ml.) red Vermouth
Sweet - 3/4 oz. (21 ml.) red Vermouth

These recipes all add up to a total of 2 1/2 oz. (75 ml.). Just do the math!

The Gibson

The Gibson is an Extra Dry Martini decorated with a small pickled onion skewered with a pick.

The Vodka Martini

Use the martini recipe and replace Dry Gin with Vodka. Decorate in the same manner as the Martini.
